Laser Light-Scattering Characterization of the Molecular Weight Distribution of Dextran

چکیده

Laser light scattering (LLS) including the angular dependence of the absolute integrated scattered intensity (StaticLLS) and of the line-widthdistribution (dynamic LLS) has been used to characterize the molecular weight distributions of dextran samples with different branching densities. In the procees of converting a translational diffusion coefficient distribution (G(D)) obtained from the precisely measured intensity-intensity time correlation function into a molecular weight distribution (MWD), we encountered the following two problems: the change of the dextran conformation as a function of molecular weight and the lack of a set of narrowly distributed dextran standards. A procedure to solve these two problems simultaneously has been presented, wherein the weight-average molecular weight (M,) obtained from static LLS is used to constrain the conversion of G(D) to MWD. By using this procedure, we were able to obtain a calibration of D (cm*/s) = 1.98 X 10-'M-~0~Bs7-0~Mo1 lam1 with a set of broadly distributed dextrans and to accomplish the calculation of MWD of dextran from the measured spectral distribution. The calculated molecular weight distributions are fairly comparable to the ones obtained from gel filtration experiments.

Dynamic Light-Scattering Characterization of the Molecular Weight Distribution of Unfractionated Polyimide

Using a developed laser light-scattering (LLS) procedure, we accomplished the characterization of an unfractionated polyimide (UPI) in CHCl3 at 25°C. The Laplace inversion of precisely measured intensity–intensity time correlation function from dynamic LLS leads us first to an estimate of the characteristic line-width distribution G(G), and then to the translational diffusion coefficient distri...

Characterization of the Dextran Produced by Leuconostoc mesenteroides from Date Fruit Extract

In the present study, the production of dextran from date extract and sucrose as carbon sources by the bacterium Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B512 (f) was investigated. In comparison to blue dextran (Mw≈2000 Da), dextran molecular weight was reduced (Mw2000 KDa). Flow behavior indices of dextran solutions from date extracts were investigated and rheological parameters were evaluated at concen...

Laser Light-Scattering Study of Novel Thermoplastics. 2. Phenolphthalein Poly(ether sulfone) (PES-C)

Five narrowly distributed fractions of phenolphthalein poly(ether sulfone) (PES-C) were studied in CHCl3 by both static and dynamic laser light scattering (LLS) at 25 °C. The dynamic LLS showed that the PES-C samples contain some large polymer clusters as in previously studied phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C). These large clusters can be removed by a 0.1-ím filter. Our results showed ...
